Getting Started

Welcome to the Lab! We are excited to have you join our team!

Before getting started, first be sure to check and complete any safety requirements, as summarized here.

In parallel, send screenshots showing all successfully completed safety module tests to Prof. Nielsen in order to initiate the request for Biodesign badging and access. You will then set up an appointment with the badging office to complete the process. In general, Undergraduates and volunteers are only eligible for access M-F 9-5.

Please also send an email to Prof. Nielsen in order to request access to the following important research items:

  • Benching – used to analyze DNA sequences, design cloning strategies, etc. (you will be invited to sign up for an account and be linked to our group)
  • Google Drive – access to shared protocols, database, etc. (don’t forget to add your own to the collection!)
  • Equipment calendars – used to reserve time on the autoclaves, analytical instruments, etc.
  • Group Zoom Channel – useful for sharing info directly with the entire group

Other housekeeping details after your start:

  • Be sure to receive proper training on all equipment before using it
  • Discuss with current members regarding how you can help with communal task/chores to keep the lab clean and running smoothly
  • Send Prof. Nielsen a photo of yourself if you would like it added to the Group website
  • Ask Prof. Nielsen about available lab bench and desk space for getting set up
  • Graduate students, be sure to familiarize yourself with the Grad Student Handbook for your program (like these for CHE)
