Principal Investigator

Prof. Mojdeh Khorsand

Prof. Khorsand is an Associate Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. Her research and teaching activities are mainly in the domain of electric power and energy systems.
Prof. Khorsand received her doctorate from the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University in 2017 and her M.Sc. and B.Sc. degrees from Iran University of Science and Technology and Mazandaran University, respectively.
Her research expertise includes power systems operations and planning, power systems restoration and cascading events, cybersecurity for electric power systems, renewable energy, transient stability studies, protection systems, power flow control technologies, stochastic optimization, and electric energy markets.


Current Students

Almuthana Alharbi

Ph.D. Student

Almuthana Alharbi completed his B.Sc. from Jazan University, Saudi Arabia, in 2014. He started working as a teaching assistant in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Jazan University, Saudi Arabia. in 2015. He received his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Queensland, Australia, in 2018. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in Power Systems. His research interests include Power System Protection, Inverter-Based Resources, Power System Transients, and Security Assessment under High Penetration Levels of Inverter-Based Resources.

Giritharan Vijay Iswaran

Ph.D. Student

Giritharan Vijay Iswaran completed his Bachelor of Engineering in 2019 from Anna University, India, post which completed his Master of Science in Electrical Engineering from Arizona State University in 2022. He is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in the Power System Dynamics and Control area. His research interests include Inverter Based Resources, Power System Stability, Dynamics, and Control.

Sara Ostovar

Ph.D. Student

Sara Ostovar is a Ph.D. student in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. She received her Master’s degree in Energy Systems Engineering from Sharif University of Technology in 2022. Sara serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals, including IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification and IET Generation, Transmission, and Distribution. Her research interests encompass optimization aspects of power systems, electricity markets, power system flexibility and reliability assessment, and grid integration of renewable energy sources. Additionally, she focuses on Machine Learning applications in smart grids, particularly for load forecasting.

Hari Krishna Achuthan Parthasarathy

Ph.D. Student

Hari Krishna Achuthan Parthasarathy completed his B.E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from SSN college of Engineering in 2022 after which he graduated with an M.S. in Power systems from ASU in 2024. He is currently pursuing a PhD in power systems and M.S. in operations research concurrently at ASU. His research interests include DER Scheduling, ADMS applications, TSO-DSO-DERA coordination and computational applications in power system operations.

Nirupama Pudukkarai Srinivas

Ph.D. Student

Nirupama (Niru) earned her Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from PES University, India. Following this, she pursued her Master of Science in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. Her Ph.D. work delves into Non-Intrusive Load Monitoring and Appliance-level load forecasting. Her research interests are along the domains of Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) and Electric Load Intelligence. Additionally, she serves as the Chair of the IEEE PES ASU Student Chapter and is the Coordinator for Conferences and Meetings in the IEEE PES Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee.

Reza Cheshomi

Ph.D. Student

Reza Cheshomi received his B.Sc. from Hakim Sabzevari University and his M.Sc. from University of Tehran, both in Electrical Engineering-Power Systems. He is pursuing a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering at Arizona State University. His research focuses on Machine Learning Applications in Power Systems, Power System Protection, and Power System Transient Stability Analysis.

Amir Esmaeili Nezhad

Ph.D. Student

Amir Esmaeili Nezhad is a Ph.D. student in the School of Electrical, Computer, and Energy Engineering at Arizona State University. He earned his Master’s degree in Electrical Power Engineering, specializing in High Voltage Engineering, from University of Tehran in 2022. Amir serves as a reviewer for leading scientific journals, including IEEE Transactions on Transportation Electrification, IEEE Transactions on Industrial Electronics, and IET Generation, Transmission, and Distribution. His research interests include high voltage engineering, condition assessment of power system equipment—particularly transformers—and optimization aspects of power systems. He also explores topics such as electricity markets, power system flexibility and reliability, grid integration of renewable energy sources, and Machine Learning applications in smart grids.

Alaa M Zewila

Ph.D. Student

Alaa is a Ph.D. Student working on the impact of Inverter Based Resources (IBRs) on the protection for distribution systems. He is currently employed as an Electrical Engineer and Southern California Edison. He received his Master of Science from California State University, Los Angeles, in 2007, in power and control systems. He completed his Bachelor’s degree from Zagazig University, Egypt, in 1997. His research interests are along renewable penetration in distrubution and transmission systems.
